DANCE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
A Basic Ballroom certificate is available to all students including those who may need to attend irregularly, those who are transient, and those who attend regularly and have plans to accumulate certificate credits for the “FABULOUS FIVE CERTIFICATE” and specifically for the purpose of graduating to advanced classes.
Our dance classes are divided into two groups of students: (1) basic or beginner and (2) intermediate:
- We offer 3 weeks of instruction and 1 dance per month. Classes are held each Monday, except on the 2nd Monday we offer a monthly dance with a live band so you can take what you have learned to the dance floor.
- A “Certificate of Basic Ballroom” is awarded to each student who masters the 5 basic steps (and any other specific requirements) in any one of the following dances: (a) East Coast Swing (b) Cha-Cha (c) Waltz (d) Foxtrot or (e) Rumba.
- Before attending class, please check our annual curriculum to determine the type of dance instruction currently available.
- Students will have the opportunity to be considered for a Basic Ballroom certificate following each six-week period (or 2 months) of instruction in the offered dance.
- Certificates are performance based and not attendance based.
- You will be required to attain a “Certificate of Basic Ballroom” in the offered dance before you may attend intermediate classes.
- If a student feels confident that he/she already qualifies for a Certificate of Basic Ballroom in any one of the 5 dances currently offered, please consult an instructor for nomination. If the student demonstrates the ability and necessary qualifications, the instructor may approve him/her for participation in intermediate classes pending the next award presentation, at which time he/she will receive his/her basic certificate.
- To apply for a certificate in any one of the 5 dances, the student must be observed and nominated by an instructor. A minimum of three instructors will approve the student nomination and authenticate the award certificate.
- Certificates will be awarded during regular group meeting time at the end of the class, on the Monday ending the six week dance instruction period and just prior to a monthly dance.
- Those who receive certificates will be recognized by asking them to stand for applause during the dance break the following week.
- A certificate is not awarded to students in the intermediate class because it is the highest level offered at this time and participation is ongoing. However, you will want to complete your basic certificate in each of the 5 dances so you will be able to continue participating in advanced instruction throughout the year.
FABULOUS FIVE CERTIFICATE
- The “Fabulous Five Certificate” is awarded to each student who accumulates 5 Basic Ballroom certificates, one in each of the five offered dances.
- Other requirements for the Fabulous Five Certificate:
- Familiarity with basic ballroom dance terms, (b) names of the 5 basic steps for each of the 5 dances, (c) timing & count for each of the 5 dances and (d) the 5 positions of dance and the name of each position.
For planning purposes, please refer to our Annual Curriculum before attending class. Please wear well-fitting yet comfortable, smooth bottom shoes, shoes that do not move around on your feet. No athletic shoes, boots, flip-flops or sling back dress shoes please. Please do not buy expensive dance shoes unless you have decided to “keep on dancing” and then you are going to “need” them! We are so glad you have decided to join us!
